Background of the study
Continuing education plays a pivotal role in shaping the cognitive and social development of youths, particularly in regions susceptible to extremist ideologies. In Mubi North Local Government Area, Adamawa State, recent trends indicate that lack of access to quality education has contributed to the vulnerability of young people to radicalization (Ibrahim, 2025). The integration of continuing education programs has been identified as a transformative approach to counter this challenge. These programs not only impart critical academic skills but also encourage critical thinking, civic responsibility, and tolerance. The region has experienced socio-political challenges over the years, and emerging evidence suggests that educational interventions can serve as a buffer against the ideological narratives that fuel radical behaviors (Chukwu, 2024). Researchers have argued that education fosters resilience and provides alternative narratives that empower youth to engage in peaceful societal transformation (Adeyemi, 2023). Furthermore, continuing education initiatives are often coupled with community-based programs that reinforce social cohesion, create economic opportunities, and strengthen local governance. These measures are crucial in regions where socio-economic hardships and political instability provide fertile ground for radicalization. Recent studies indicate that areas with robust continuing education initiatives witness a decline in radical activities, as educational empowerment fosters a sense of purpose and community belonging among the youth. In addition, local stakeholders such as community leaders, educators, and policy makers have acknowledged the need for a reformed educational agenda that addresses both academic and psychosocial needs. The integration of non-formal learning methods—ranging from vocational training to civic education—has proven effective in equipping youths with the necessary tools to navigate contemporary challenges. This approach is supported by global trends that recognize education as a cornerstone in the fight against extremism (Ibrahim, 2025). While challenges remain, including limited resources and infrastructural deficits, the overall impact of continuing education in reducing youth radicalization appears promising. Hence, this study is designed to critically examine the multifaceted benefits of continuing education in Mubi North, with a focus on its capacity to mitigate the risk factors associated with radicalization.

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of continuing education, Mubi North faces a high rate of youth radicalization that threatens community stability and development. A significant challenge is the inadequate infrastructure and limited resources that hinder the implementation of effective educational programs. Many local youths are exposed to radical ideologies partly due to socio-economic deprivations and lack of educational engagement (Chukwu, 2024). The educational system’s inability to integrate modern pedagogical techniques has led to an information void where extremist narratives easily take root. Furthermore, the absence of systematic monitoring and evaluation mechanisms in these programs prevents the identification of best practices and areas needing improvement. Stakeholders in the education and security sectors have expressed concerns about the long-term consequences of youth disengagement from formal education, which may inadvertently push them towards radical groups that promise a sense of belonging and purpose (Adeyemi, 2023). Additionally, there is a disconnect between policy formulation at higher government levels and implementation at the grassroots, leading to ineffective educational outreach. The compounded effects of these challenges contribute to a cycle where poor educational access leads to increased susceptibility to radicalization, and rising insecurity further disrupts educational continuity. The problem is exacerbated by the rapid spread of misinformation via social media, which reinforces radical ideologies and undermines the value of formal education. Without targeted intervention strategies, the youth of Mubi North remain at risk of being drawn into extremist networks, thereby compromising not only their future but also the broader socio-economic development of the region (Ibrahim, 2025). This study seeks to address these multifaceted issues by evaluating the impact of continuing education as a counter-radicalization strategy, thereby identifying key areas for policy intervention and resource allocation.

Objectives of the study

  • To evaluate the relationship between continuing education and the reduction of youth radicalization.

  • To identify the challenges and opportunities within current educational programs.

  • To propose policy recommendations for enhancing continuing education as a tool for radicalization prevention.

Research questions

  • How does continuing education influence youth susceptibility to radical ideologies in Mubi North?

  • What challenges hinder the effective delivery of continuing education in the area?

  • In what ways can educational programs be optimized to reduce youth radicalization?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: There is a significant negative relationship between participation in continuing education programs and youth radicalization.

  • H2: Inadequate educational infrastructure is significantly associated with higher rates of youth radicalization.

  • H3: Strengthening continuing education will result in improved resilience against extremist ideologies among youth.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides empirical evidence on how continuing education can serve as an effective intervention to reduce youth radicalization in Mubi North. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, educators, and community leaders seeking innovative strategies to address extremism. By highlighting both the strengths and limitations of current educational initiatives, the study offers actionable insights for enhancing program efficacy and community engagement (Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to the impact of continuing education on youth radicalization in Mubi North Local Government Area, Adamawa State. The research focuses solely on local educational programs and their influence on radicalization tendencies. Limitations include geographical constraints and potential challenges in obtaining comprehensive data from all relevant stakeholders.

Definitions of terms

  • Continuing education: Programs designed to provide lifelong learning opportunities beyond traditional academic settings.

  • Youth radicalization: The process by which young individuals are exposed to and influenced by extremist ideologies.

  • Educational intervention: Structured programs aimed at improving knowledge, skills, and social attitudes.
